Cahaba DD's Cherry Hibiscus Sour

The Review

Every year Cahaba brews DD’s Cherry Hibiscus Sour in honor of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama, donating a portion of every six-pack sold to BCRFA. It’s a lovely thing to do. It’s also — and this matters — a genuinely excellent beer that would earn its place on the tap list without the charitable angle.

Brewed as a Berliner Weisse, it pours a vivid pink-red that is absolutely going to get photographed. The nose is tart cherry, hibiscus, and a light lactic sourness that promises what the palate delivers: bright, crisp tartness, real cherry flavor without going candy-artificial, and a hibiscus floral note that lifts the whole thing. The finish is clean and effervescent, extraordinarily light-bodied with a fruit sweetness that softens the lactic edge.

It is, as Cahaba describes it, extraordinarily light and effervescent. They’re right. It’s the kind of beer that drinks faster than you mean to drink it, which is fine because every sip benefits a good cause and also because it’s really good.

Order two. One for you. One because it’s the right thing to do.
