The Review
Birmingham’s craft beer story is mostly told through the Lakeview-Avondale-Parkside corridor, which is where the flagship taprooms and the national press tend to land. True Story Brewing in Crestwood is the counternarrative: a neighborhood microbrewery on Crestwood Boulevard that does things quietly and does them well.
The space is small and unpretentious, with a rotating calendar of Jazz nights, comedy open mics, and karaoke that gives it a community-bar energy most craft breweries can’t manufacture. The beer program is small-batch and rotating, which means the tap list changes regularly and you need to check Instagram before you go — which is actually a feature, because it creates genuine anticipation around each new release.
What True Story does consistently well is balance: their beers don’t try to knock you down, they try to be good. Crisp, refreshing, juicy — the kinds of words that sound simple but represent real craft when they’re achieved. Their sours are properly tart without going harsh. Their IPAs are full-bodied and balanced. The stout when it’s on is smooth and worth the drive from wherever you are in the city.
Crestwood deserves this. Birmingham deserves to know about it.
