The Review

Language of Thunder is what happens when TrimTab stops playing it safe and goes full send on a barrel-aged imperial stout. The name alone should tell you this isn’t a casual Tuesday beer — it’s a sit-down, no-distractions, this-is-a-whole-event beer.

It pours jet black, no light gets through, with a thin tan head that disappears fast. The nose is deep and complex: bourbon barrel oak, dark chocolate, espresso, a faint vanilla sweetness, and something dried-fruit and boozy underneath. The palate delivers on every promise: rich, layered, genuinely warming, with the kind of depth that makes you want to revisit it five minutes later and find something different.

TrimTab has been developing their barrel program for years and Language of Thunder is where it peaks — a beer that competes with the nationally recognized imperial stouts from Founders, Goose Island, and Fremont without announcing that as the goal. It just quietly achieves it and lets you draw your own conclusions.

In Birmingham, in February, in the tasting gallery with local art on the walls: this is the correct way to spend an evening. Language of Thunder is worth every patient sip.
