The Review
Most breweries have a small-batch experimental series. TrimTab has the Gallery Series, and the name isn’t accidental — the tasting gallery at 5th Avenue South genuinely doubles as an art space for local artists, and the beers match the ambition of the work on the walls.
Gallery Series releases vary — imperial stouts, wild fermentations, experimental hop combinations — but the one that keeps coming up in conversation is whatever barrel-aged stout they’ve got on at any given time. Rich, complex, boozy in the best way, with the kind of layered depth you usually associate with breweries twice TrimTab’s size.
The format is part of the appeal: limited release, small batch, often in 22-ounce bombers. You either catch it or you don’t, which creates genuine urgency in a city that has plenty of good beer but not always plenty of great beer.
TrimTab’s mission is explicitly about small things making big impacts. The Gallery Series is their proof of concept: a tiny Birmingham brewery making beers that punch as hard as anything coming out of the coastal craft hubs. Worth hunting for. Worth being in Birmingham for.
