The Review

Every September, Cahaba Brewing does something quietly impressive: they make one of the most authentic-tasting Oktoberfest beers south of the Mason-Dixon line, and they don’t make a big deal about it. No festival branding. No giant stein gimmicks. Just a proper Märzen, brewed with continental malts, a German hop blend, and a yeast that knows what it’s doing.

It pours deep amber-gold with a cream-colored head and a nose of toasted bread, caramel malt, and a faint floral note from the German hops. The palate is full-bodied and malt-forward — rich without being heavy — with a clean fermentation character that lets the grain do the talking. The bitterness is gentle, the finish is dry, and the whole thing comes together with the kind of balance that takes years to dial in.

Cahaba calls it “Birmingham’s premier Oktoberfest beer” and it’s not bragging — there isn’t much competition, and what competition there is doesn’t drink like this. At the 5th Avenue taproom on a cooling September evening with the patio open and a food truck outside, this is the closest Birmingham gets to Munich without a plane ticket.

Get it while the season lasts. It always sells out before you think it will.
