The Review

Cahaba Brewing named their flagship IPA after the indigenous word for the Cahaba River — “the water above” — and it’s the kind of gesture that lands differently once you’ve spent time on that river, or more importantly, with this beer.

Oka Uba pours a deep orange-red, luminous in the light, with a white head and a nose that opens with earthy hop character, citrus undercurrent, and a woodsy quality that feels right at home with the outdoor-adventure branding. The malt base is solid and caramel-forward, giving the hops something real to push against.

The palate leans earthy and slightly citrusy — not the big tropical fruit bomb of a modern NEIPA, but a classic American IPA that knows what it is. Dry-hopped for aroma, the bitterness is present but measured. The finish lingers pleasantly with resin and a touch of caramel sweetness that balances everything out.

This is a staple of both the Cahaba community and the taproom, as the brewery puts it — and you believe it after the first pint. The Blonde gets the name recognition, but Oka Uba is the beer Cahaba regulars point to when they want to convince an out-of-towner that Birmingham’s craft beer scene is for real.
