The Review
The most interesting thing about Cahaba Lager isn’t what’s in it — Saaz hops, pilsner malt, flaked maize — it’s what they do with the proceeds. For every can sold, a portion goes to the Cahaba River Society, the conservation organization dedicated to protecting one of the most biodiverse rivers in North America. The brewery named after the river supporting the organization that saves it. That’s a full circle.
The beer itself is brewed simply and well. Pale straw-gold, excellent clarity, a tight white head. The nose is clean grain, a touch of floral Saaz, and a faint corn sweetness. On the palate: light-bodied, crisp, finishing dry with just enough bitterness to keep things honest. Cahaba describes it as “simple ingredients yet brewed complexity,” which is exactly right — a good lager is harder to make than it looks, and this one looks easy.
In a lineup that includes hazy IPAs, cherry hibiscus sours, and an Oktoberfest Märzen, the Cahaba Lager is the quietly confident one. It’s the beer for people who have already proved they drink craft beer and now just want something cold and well-made.
Find your balance, as they say. And then maybe donate to the river while you’re at it.
