The Review
Birmingham District Brewing opened in November 2018 with 20+ years of combined brewing experience between founders Cale Sellers and head brewer James Sumpter, a taproom in The Battery, and a vision for what a Birmingham craft brewery could look and taste like. Five years later, the vision is delivering.
The five-year anniversary was marked with a series of barrel-aged releases — specialty beers that spent months developing in casks — and an event at The Battery that packed the taproom and spilled onto the patio. It was the kind of evening that makes you realize a brewery has become part of a neighborhood’s identity without anyone declaring it.
Birmingham District’s tap list on any given day includes Maingate Blonde, Lose Your Way NEIPA, their popular rotating sours, and seasonals that reflect genuine ambition — a 5-year anniversary series in barrel-aged formats, mining-heritage themed names across the lineup, and a core beer program that’s consistent enough to trust and varied enough to keep you coming back.
The Battery neighborhood has grown up around them. Gus’s Fried Chicken is next door. The bones of a great Birmingham beer destination are all in place. Five years in, Birmingham District is exactly where they should be — and the next five look better.
