For three days every fall, Denver becomes the undisputed capital of American craft beer. The Great American Beer Festival — organized by the Brewers Association and held annually at the Colorado Convention Center — is the largest ticketed beer event in the United States and, for many in the industry, the closest thing the craft beer world has to a pilgrimage site.
The numbers are staggering in the best possible way. More than 800 breweries pour upwards of 4,000 beers across the festival’s three sessions. A panel of professional judges evaluates entries across more than 100 style categories, and the medals handed out at Saturday’s awards ceremony carry genuine weight in the industry — a GABF gold is the kind of thing a brewery puts on its cans for years.
For first-timers, the scale can be overwhelming. The floor stretches for what feels like miles, with booths organized loosely by region. Having a strategy helps. Most veterans recommend identifying your must-visit breweries in advance, getting there early for the smaller producers who run out of their limited releases quickly, and — crucially — eating a serious meal beforehand and drinking water throughout. The sessions are long, the pours add up, and pacing matters.
Beyond the main floor, the festival has evolved to include educational seminars, paired dinners, and specialty sessions focused on particular styles. The Friday afternoon session is traditionally the most relaxed and least crowded. Saturday evening, by contrast, is the most electric — the awards have been announced, winning breweries are pouring celebratory rounds, and the energy on the floor is unlike anything else in the beer calendar.
Tickets typically sell out weeks in advance. The Brewers Association releases them in multiple waves, and signing up for their mailing list is the most reliable way to get notified before they’re gone.
