Dogfish Head Craft Brewery — Delaware’s Delightfully Off-Centered Institution

Sam Calagione started Dogfish Head in 1995 in Milton, Delaware with a phrase that has since become one of craft beer’s defining mantras: “Off-Centered Ales for Off-Centered People.” It was a statement of purpose, and over three decades, Dogfish Head has never stopped making it true — to the perpetual delight of adventurous drinkers and the perpetual bewilderment of anyone who thought beer should just taste like beer.

Dogfish Head’s catalog reads like an experimental brewery run by a history professor with a very permissive ingredient budget. 60 Minute IPA — hops added continuously throughout a 60-minute boil — remains a foundational American IPA. 90 Minute scales it up to imperial territory. 120 Minute, at anywhere from 15-20% ABV, is less a beer than an event. Their Ancient Ales series recreates beverages from thousands of years of human history using archaeological data — Midas Touch (inspired by a 2,700-year-old Turkish drink), Theobroma (an ancient Mesoamerican chocolate ale), and others that make you reconsider what beer even means.

The Milton brewery offers their iconic Steampunk Tree House — a legendary photo opportunity — alongside full tours and their excellent restaurant. A recent national readers’ poll crowned Dogfish Head’s brewpub as the best in the entire country. Thirty years of audacity, and they’ve earned every bit of it.

Thirty years of making weird, wonderful, ambitious beer. Dogfish Head is America’s most entertaining brewery, and it’s not particularly close.
