The Review

Every brewery has that one beer that punches above its weight class. For Good People, it’s not the famous Snake Handler or the workhorse IPA — it’s the Coffee Oatmeal Stout, a beer that converts people who swear they don’t like stouts approximately every fifteen minutes on a busy Friday night.

It pours deep brown, nearly black, with a creamy tan head. The nose is straight-up coffee — bold, roasty, fresh-ground — with dark chocolate underneath. The palate delivers on that promise and then some: big coffee presence, a wallop of Willamette hops that most stouts would never dare include, and a richness from the oats that keeps things smooth without tipping into syrup.

What’s remarkable is the drinkability. This is a complex, flavorful stout that somehow feels approachable. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, which makes it the perfect long-afternoon beer at the taproom while the Barons play across the street at Regions Field.

Good People calls it COS for short. Their regulars just call it “the stout.” Order it cold, drink it slow, and watch someone nearby try it for the first time and immediately reconsider their entire relationship with dark beer. It happens every night.
