The Review
Ghost Train Brewing occupies Cahaba’s old space on 3rd Avenue South, which gives the operation an immediate credibility that most new breweries have to spend years earning. Since opening their own taproom in October 2016, they’ve built a reputation for beers with railway themes and personalities to match.
The Go-Devil Golden Ale is their most approachable offering and their smartest one. It pours a brilliant clear gold with a white head, and the nose leads with Citra hops — fresh, citrusy, clean — over a light grain base. The palate is crisp and refreshing, barely bitter, finishing dry and clean with just enough hop character to keep craft beer people interested without scaring off anyone else.
Ghost Train describes it as a “West Coast interpretation of a golden ale” and “the ultimate lawnmower beer for the craft beer lover,” which is exactly right on both counts. In June in Birmingham, this is the call. Cold, clean, crushable, and smart enough to not be embarrassed by the company it keeps on the tap list.
The railway name is apt — Go-Devil is what you call the handcar operators used to use on the tracks. It moves fast, it’s efficient, and it gets you where you’re going without any fuss. Perfect beer. Perfect name.
