The Review
Birmingham District Brewing opened in November 2018 in The Battery — the mixed-use development at 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street — and named themselves after the district system Birmingham used to govern its neighborhoods. Their logo and beer names pay tribute to the city’s mining and steel heritage, which in a building that used to house industrial operations feels exactly right.
Lose Your Way NEIPA is the flagship that made people pay attention. It pours deep hazy gold, opaque and vibrant, with a white head. The nose is dense and tropical — mango, passionfruit, a citrus blossom note — with just enough hop dankness underneath to remind you it’s an IPA. The palate is soft and pillowy, juicy fruit dominating, with a bitterness that’s gentle but present, and a finish that stays juicy without going cloying.
At the Battery taproom, surrounded by exposed brick and the kind of industrial aesthetic that’s both authentic and carefully curated, Lose Your Way feels right. It’s the beer you order while getting your bearings in a neighborhood that wasn’t on your radar two years ago.
Birmingham District is building something real. Lose Your Way NEIPA is their most compelling argument to date.
