The Review

When Birmingham District Brewing released their five-year anniversary barrel-aged series, it answered a question craft beer fans had been quietly asking since 2018: does this brewery have the patience and ambition to go deep?

The answer was yes. The anniversary series featured specialty ales that had been aging in oak for months — developing the complexity, warmth, and character that only time and good wood can produce. The flagship of the series was a barrel-aged dark ale that showed what happens when a brewery with good instincts stops worrying about production volume and starts worrying about what’s possible.

Deep mahogany in the glass, bourbon oak on the nose alongside dark fruit and vanilla, a palate that builds from roasted malt through caramel to a warm, oak-tinged finish that lingers for minutes. It’s the kind of beer that makes you set your phone down and pay attention.

Birmingham District’s regular lineup is reliably good. Their anniversary series proved they have the range and the ambition to make something great. In a city with more craft options than ever, that distinction matters. Here’s to five more years of the Magic City in a glass.
