The Review

If Miss Fancy the elephant had a preferred beer — and given the historical record, she absolutely would have had a preference — it probably would have been this one. Avondale’s Vanillaphant Porter takes their elephant-themed lineup from Belgian gold into dark porter territory, and the results are quietly wonderful.

It pours deep brown with a tan head and a nose that opens with roasted chocolate, coffee, and vanilla — specifically, as the brewery is happy to tell you, hand-selected Madagascar vanilla beans from the Bourbon Islands. The palate is surprisingly light-bodied for a porter: roasted nut, chocolate, and a clean vanilla sweetness on the finish that never tips into dessert territory.

This is the beer that handles the “I don’t usually like dark beer” crowd. It’s approachable enough to onboard the hesitant without being so soft that the stout people feel cheated. The vanilla is present but restrained — it enhances rather than dominates, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

Avondale’s entire lineup is built around story and character. Vanillaphant Porter earns both — it’s the one you order second, after Miss Fancy’s Tripel rearranged your expectations, just to prove Avondale has range.
