The Review
Avondale Brewing is known for their Belgian farmhouse ales, and rightly so. But Battlefield IPA is a reminder that they can play the American IPA game just as well — and they do it on their own terms.
It pours a clear amber-gold with a white head and a nose that goes straight West Coast: pine resin, grapefruit pith, a hint of dank earthiness. No tropical fruit softness here, no haze, no apologies. The palate follows through — assertive bitterness up front, a firm malt backbone that holds the structure, and a long dry finish that lingers with resin and citrus peel.
At 6.8% it’s firmly in session-IPA territory for the style, but it doesn’t drink that way — it’s full-bodied and confident. “Aggressive as its name,” as Avondale puts it, which is either a promise or a warning depending on where you are in your evening.
Battlefield sits alongside Miss Fancy’s Tripel and Spring Street Saison in Avondale’s core lineup, and it proves the point: this brewery isn’t a one-trick Belgian pony. They can make a proper West Coast IPA with the same conviction they bring to their farmhouse ales. Order it cold, drink it serious, and then order the Saison to come back down.
